Sleigh Bells/Treats

TreatsSleigh Bells is an American noise pop music duo. The group released their debut album, Treats, on May 11, 2010.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, the duo is composed of Derek E. Miller (songwriter, guitarist, producer) and Alexis Krauss (vocals). The duo met and formed in 2008, when Miller was waiting tables on Alexis and her mother at a neighborhood Brazilian restaurant. Miller mentioned he was looking for a female vocalist to work with on a musical project, for which Alexis’ mother immediately volunteered her. Miller was formerly the guitarist for the post-hardcore band Poison the Well and Krauss was a member of the teen pop group Rubyblue as a teenager.

The duo performed at the CMJ Music Marathon in 2009.[1] They are signed to M.I.A.‘s N.E.E.T. Recordings.[2] They have released several tracks online, which have gained attention from the New York Times, Pitchfork Media, ABC‘s Amplified, and other sources. Pitchfork named their song “Crown on the Ground” the 57th best track of 2009.[3] They performed at the 2010 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2010,[4] and will play the Pitchfork Music Festival.

The group released “Tell ‘Em”, the first single from their debut album, Treats, as a free download in April 2010.[5] Treats was released on May 11, 2010 exclusively through the iTunes Store by N.E.E.T. Recordings in partnership with Mom + Pop Records.

Sleigh Bells are known for their energetic and wild performances. Guitarist Derek Miller often uses a Red Gibson SG and a variety of distortion pedals through an Marshall Amplifier. They play to a backing track of music from laptop software so the only live instrument is the guitar. [Wikipedia]

Tell ‘Em—-With no time for gentle interludes or nice musical introductions, the noise of this band hits you right out of the gate…displaying a nice blend of 80’s style Devo and 00’s Rihanna, this literally sent shivers up my spine. This just might fill that empty space that i have been feeling with the latest crop of new releases. This is brilliant…you can not dance to this, you cannot snooze to this… con not relax to this  but you can definitely lose yourself to this. This in GENIUS!!!

Kids—-With a machine generated chainsaw noise to begin the song, the vocal enters and delivers lines that are neither decipherable or pertinent…none the less, this is pure and unadulterated art noise. This is huge landscapes of sounds that are only minutely  interrupted by the vocal…this is layers and layers of industry and artifacts…this is an adventure and a big game…BRILLIANT!!!

Riot Rhythm—-Huge drums and annoying sounds greet you at the onset of this song. This is deep bass y’all…but it works masterfully well. this is M.I.A. on crack!!!! This is the most erratic ecstasy infused dance floor ever witnessed…this is pure perfection. This is incredible!!!

Infinity Guitars—-This is a huge and grandiose mix of noise and guitars, combined with a shout a long vocal that created a literal art exhibit for your ears. This is liberating, this is fresh, this is like nothing i have heard since the very onset of Throbbing Gristle and the Industrial movement. WOW!!!!

Run The Heart—-With huge electro blast at the very onset, this is yet another track that defies definition of modern music. If this is a new musical movement, I embrace it with open arms. This is lush, layered and full of magnificent noise. The vocal remains sublime and only secondary to all of the sounds that are moving like ravenous maggots underneath the surface. This is brilliant.

Rachel—-Beginning with huge breathy noises and synth lines that will explode your head, the song is rather sedate compared to some of the earlier tracks on this release…until the machine generated noise really kicks into gear. This is avant-garde manipulation of every sense that you posess…thisis an adventure down and back out of the hole with Alice….and you stand like a fool ready to dive back in again…good luck…it is bound to be a grand time.

Rill Rill—-This is M.I.A. meets new noise!!! The layers of sounds and noise set next to the almost beautiful vocal sets your senses on fire. You are not sure if you should dance or mope, be happy or kill yourself…this is a tour de force of literal contradictory sounds that will take your brain more than a few hours to figure out….good luck…again.

Crown On The Ground—-With a shrill sound that sounds like a fire alarm going off in your brain, this song is so full of noise and assaulting sounds you do not know where to turn your head to nest. The vocal is an almost afterthought…the noise and the aural elements of the song allows such a confusion you really could care less about the vocals. Please tell me there are more bands making music like this…I am totally in love with this shit!!!!

Straight A’s—-With huge musical slaps that will redden your entire body and a noisy and insane guitar that will confuse your brain, you are assaulted from every angle. This is even better than the best Atari Teenage Riot track EVER. You will have every part of your body attacked in less than two minutes and back up and do it again.

A/B Machines—-OK, I know that this song borrows a sample from the Chemical Brothers…it runs through the lower level of the song without mistake or apology. All vocal remnants are gone and you are left instead with musical noise that will set you soul on fire…I do not know why on the face of this earth i waited to get this…this is STELLAR!!!!!

Treats—-With a layered guitar sound that reminds me of How Soon Is Now at the onset and then dissolving into a huge avant-garde guitar lick that is almost metal, the song allows for the vocal to return in almost a whisper compared to the level of noise from the guitars and machines. This is splendid. I can’t wait to investigate somewhat further and find bands like this….I am addicted and need another fix!!!

***** out of 5 [!!!!!]
