Carnivore / Carnivore

CarnivoreCarnivore was an American crossover thrash band formed in Brooklyn, New York by Peter Steele (later of Type O Negative fame), and was formed out of the ruins of the Brooklyn hard rock group Fallout in 1982.

The band released Carnivore in January 1986. For the first album, the band spelled their names in what they thought were “exotic” ways. For instance, Louis Beateaux instead of Beato. In September 1987 they released Retaliation. Soon after the second album was released, the band broke up and Peter Steele formed a new band called Subzero, which would later be renamed Type O Negative. According to the sleeve notes of the “Top Shelf Edition” of their second album, the first Type O Negative album, Slow Deep and Hard was composed largely from material originally written for Carnivore.

During the time Carnivore was playing, drummer Louis Beato was also a bus driver in Manhattan, a job he kept after the group disbanded. He is currently a supervisor with the MTA. Lou’s first band performed in his friend George’s garage in Brooklyn. George was picked as the lead singer for this band being he was the only one they knew who could afford to buy a microphone. On guitar was “Bull Dog,” whose real name is not known.

The Analysis:

Predator—-Beginning with a full bevy of sound effects and pseudo Metal sounds, once the vocal smacks you in the face, you know that this is to be taken seriously. It is so nice to hear Peter [RIP] on this release…cutting his teeth but still delivering his vocals much as we have all become accustomed to. This is fantastic…much of Steele’s unique inflections are present hear…as well as a few that he abandoned…including some rather unique deep growls. This is fantastic…and still sounds amazingly fresh to me!!

Carnivore—-This is much more in the Type O vein that we have all become accustomed to…the sound of the track is dark and the vocal delivery sounds as if it were indeed a Type O track…the huge chorus is fantastic and the speed of this track is incredible. Although this was a ‘starter’ band, these are some pretty great musicians! And of course, the track has a pretty typical Steele sense of humor stamped all over it…really this is about eating….well, you know!

Male Supremacy—-At the onset of this track, the music is loaded with typical 80’s Metal sounds….delivered with lots of pomp and hair!!! The song becomes a standout once the vocal in introduced, as Steele delivers line after line in his trademark vocal style. At times, this song is pretty damn fast…at other times it is so heavy and layered it takes on a slight Sabbath sound. the chorus is a huge band sing a long that will land and stay in your brain. Stellar…this has enough mood and changes to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire 7 minutes of the track…this is fantastic!

Armageddon—-This plods like the best Sabbath track that you have never heard…this only goes to show you that Steele had the Type O vision in his brain long before it ever came to fruition. The tempo changes on this track are remarkable…going from a bass heavy dirge to an all out Thrash delivery in a matter of seconds. Steele sings so fast…you wonder how the hell he can fit so many words into one sentence…but indeed he does, and also gives you lots to ponder in the process. Magnificent!

Legion Of Doom—-Beginning with the revving of a motorcycle, the mayhem is not far behind…Steele delivers his lines as expected and needed…even this early trilling his ‘R’s’ as he is known very well for. this is not so much a song as it is an out-and-out rant…the music is haphazard and pushed to the back of the mix..allowing Pete to be right in your face…delivering line after line of puke…this is fantastic!!!

God Is Dead—-For me, the remarkable thing about this song is the galloping beat that lies in the backdrop of the song…if that is not an Iron Maiden sound, I’m not sure what is. the song though is not consistent…switching between classic 80’s Metal sounds and an all in all out thrash sound with some nice War sounds thrown in just for fun…this is incredible….not sure why I have just now discovered this band in the past year.

Thermonuclear Warrior—-Beginning with a noisy interlude, the song rushes into your brain like an ice cream headache…leaving you exhausted by time the whole damn thing is over. The star of the show is and remains Mr. Steele…delivering line after line of both awareness raising iterations and all out yelling and warning. The guitars that play in the backdrop are awesome…aggressive and classic 80’s in sound. This is just great.

World Wars III & IV—-Perhaps coming off a bit dated because of the song content…amazing how in 2010 we really don’t worry about Atomic War like we did in the 80’s…perhaps we have some humanity after all. Steele delivers line after line that warns you of the impending doom once the bomb lands in your city…it is not a pretty picture, but the song is a masterpiece of social commentary and horrific lyrics that warn of the doom that awaits us!

U.S.A. For U.S.A.—-Right out of the gate, this carries the familiar sound of 80’s Thrash metal that was very popular in the underground Metal scene at the time. this is damn noisy…I will tell you that…almost impossible to understand the vocal or to keep up with it. This is stellar though…a moment of history that fortunately for me I was able to find….just fantastic!!!

S.M.D.—-Again, this is brutal and layered noise right out of the gate. This is a very ‘dirty’ song…peppered with the command…Suck My Dick…thus S.M.D.!!! Steele is manic on this track….seemingly driven by some unforseen force that drives him to deliver line after line in a manic style that allows you to fear he may bust a blood vessel or two…this is classic stuff!!!

Sex And Violence—-When this track begins, the effects that introduce it are so dark and morose that you feel immediately at home….as the song opens up and the speed kicks in, you are treated to another classic track that shows you exactly where Steele intended to go with his future. this is a bit faster and layered than early Type O, but the sentiment is very evident. this is incredible…I, for one, really miss Peter…I only hope there is stuff in a vault somewhere that has not been released yet!
