Burzum is a musical project by Varg Vikernes (originally under the pseudonym “Count Grishnackh”). It began during 1991 in Bergen, Norway and quickly became prominent within the early Norwegian black metal scene.[1] During 1992 and 1993, Burzum recorded four albums; however, in 1994 Vikernes was convicted and imprisoned for the murder of guitarist Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth and the arson of several churches. While imprisoned, Vikernes recorded two studio albums in the dark ambient style, using only synthesized instruments, as he was not given access to drums, guitar, or bass. Burzum is one of the most influential acts in black metal.

Fallen is the eighth studio album by the Norwegian black metal band Burzum released on March 7th, 2011.

The cover art is taken from the painting Elegy (1899) by French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

The Analysis:

Fraverdenstreet—-Beginning in classic dark Burzum style, this short intro only tries to prepare you for what is to occur. There is a nice level of anticipation and ambience that accompanies the instrumental track before bursting into……

Jeg Faller—-The first thing I notice about this release is the renewed clarity that was missing from Belus….the guitars are much sharper and clearer to me. It is amazing to me that this man is able to produce all of this sound by himself!!!! There are some incredible mood shifts throughout the song as the music ebbs and flows with incredible precision. the drums and/or drum machine is fantastic. When the vocal enters…of course you can’t understand a word of this foreign release, but the evil diatribe is well in tact…..once again I am swept away…remarkable!!!

Valen—-The clarity and guitar melody continues on to this track as well. I love this new direction, although critics and die-hard fans declare it a sell out. To me, quality is quality!!! I love the double tracked vocals that add a sense of melody and harmony to the song…I NEVER thought I would hear such a thing from this man. This is epic…incredible and a favorite od mine. The guitars are huge…the drums are moderate in pace…not your typical Black Metal drumming. The vocal magically turns between evil and pleasant as if by magic…you will be swept up in this epic 9 minute track!!!

Vanvidd—-This track has a nice variation…just enough to break up the release a bit. the drums are much, much faster…falling back into the vein of predictability. The vocal is more muted and causes me top pause and wonder if this was a left over track from some other recording. the delivery is much more brutal and lacks some of the finesse of the earlier tracks on this release, although the clear levels of the vocal show some reworking. Still, this has something that appeal to the die hards and the newbies as well!!!

Enhver Til Sitt—-Returning to a more ‘Americanized’ version of melodic Black Metal, this is pretty extraordinary for me as well. I love the build-up…the slow down and then the sudden explosion of vehement vocal. The song has a deeper quality to it that pleases me beyond words…all the while deliver the melody that was missing from the last release. This is fantastic. The words are not here…as you cannot understand them, but the remarkable thing is how the feeling pervades the entire track. You know this is deep, dark and intense…no mistaking that!!!

Budstikken—-Another epic track, clocking in at a monstrous 10 minutes in length, you can understand the build up to the vocal is long and a bit tedious! None the less, the sound is a bit darker while the leads are still sharp as hell and carrying on the clarity most of this release has produced. when the downshift in the music occurs, you settle in for the onslaught…the onslaught is a bit gentle. the vocal is dark and intense, but the feeling of the song is a bit generic. There is quite a bit of spoken word on this track…but it all comes together fairly well for me as the track continues. this is a little of a let down, but it is a clear step in a new direction for Varg……

Til Hel Og Tilbake Igjen—-This begins rather odd!!!! With obscure drum banging and a slight bit of a Middle Eastern feel to the song, you wonder where this is all going? This continues for a rather long time and really got on my nerves after a time….I keep waiting and waiting for the more intense sound……it never comes. this is a disappointing end to a rather great release…..
